After an Oscars slap, Will Smith apologizes to Chris Rock.

Will Smith has apologized for his Oscars smack on Chris Rock, calling his behavior “inappropriate and terrible.”

“I would like to directly apologize to you, Chris,” he said in a statement. “I went against the grain and made a mistake.”

It comes after Smith was punished by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the incident and a thorough inquiry was ordered.

The celebrity struck Rock in the face on stage after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock was enraged by Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which is the result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

Soon after, Smith earned his first Academy Award for his role as the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.

In an Instagram statement, Smith said, “Violence in all forms is toxic and destructive.”

“Last night’s Academy Awards conduct was terrible and irresponsible.” I can accept jokes about my health, but one about Jada’s cancer was too much for me to handle, and I reacted emotionally.”

Smith quickly apologized to Rock, saying that he was “out of line.” He also apologized to both the Academy and the Williams family.

He remarked, “I deeply sorry that my actions have ruined what has otherwise been a great trip for all of us.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement before Smith’s apology that it “condemns” his behavior.

“We have formally launched a formal assessment of the incident in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law, and will consider further action and ramifications,” it stated.
