AFTER 22 YEARS, a Mafia boss has been apprehended after being discovered on Google Maps.

After being discovered on Google Maps, an Italian mafia boss who had been on the run for decades was apprehended.

Gioacchino Gammino, 61, was discovered residing under the alias Manuel in Galapagar, Spain.

Investigators said a Google Street View photo of a man who looked like Gammino standing in front of a grocery store was crucial in locating the fugitive.

In 2002, Gammino escaped from a Rome prison and was convicted to life in prison for murder the following year.

He was a member of the Stidda mafia ring in Sicily and one of Italy’s most wanted criminals.

Gammino was believed to be in Spain by Sicilian police, but a photo of him talking to a man outside El Huerto de Manu, or Manu’s Garden, sparked an investigation.

When investigators discovered a Facebook page for a now-closed eatery nearby, Cocina de Manu, his identity was established. It had posted images of Gammino dressed as a chef, with a scar on his chin identifying him.
The restaurant’s cuisine included Sicilian delicacies.

He was arrested on December 17th, but La Repubblica only published it on Wednesday.

“How did you locate me?” he reportedly asked police after his arrest. For the past ten years, I haven’t even called my family.”

Gammino is in custody in Spain and Italian police hope to bring him back to Italy by the end of February, Nicola Altiero, the deputy director of the Italian anti-mafia police unit, told Reuters news agency.
