According to Todwong, the NRM is still Uganda’s most popular political party.

Richard Todwong, the Secretary General of the NRM, has stated that the ruling party remains the most popular in the country.

Richard Todwong, the Secretary General of the NRM, has stated that the ruling party remains the most popular in the country.

“Those who believe NRM is unpopular should look at our structure to see how powerful we are. There are 30 NRM leaders in each village, parish, and sub-county. That framework is adequate. We simply mobilize them, and when we win elections, our opponents are taken aback,” Todwong explained.

The NRM Secretary General spoke at the inaugural party thanksgiving function on Tuesday, as the party celebrated its accomplishments in the year 2021.

The opposition accused the ruling party of rigging the polls after the NRM’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was declared the winner of the 2021 presidential election.

They claimed that the Electoral Commission’s findings did not reflect the will of the people, who they said had overwhelmingly voted for them.

The National Unity Platform further accused the NRM of colluding with the Electoral Commission to overturn their victory in the recent Kayunga by-election.

They said that whereas Harriet Nakweede of the NUP had won by a large margin, Andrew Muwonge of the NRM had been named the winner.

The NRM Secretary General, however, dismissed the allegations on Tuesday, claiming that the most popular party could not possibly be involved in rigging.

“Our deafening silence is not a sign of weakness. When mud is flung at you, it is advised that you do not remove it before it dries. We feel Kayunga’s story is coming to an end, and we can now erase it. We will not be frightened by anyone as long as we have the people’s mandate. Nobody is going to play with the NRM regime.”

Capt Mike Mukula, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, spoke at the same occasion and praised the party’s new leadership for fostering unity.

Such gestures, he argued, secure the party’s strength.

Mukula, on the other hand, stated that measures must be made to address poverty and unemployment, which are two of Uganda’s most important requirements.
