A Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) officer has been detained for reportedly kidnapping and demanding money from a businessman.

Captain Apollo Kwesiga, 32, of the Masaka Armoured Brigade, is being held at the Rukiga police station with Benon Arinaitwe, 37, a driver, and Patience Nsiime.

Stephen Mugabo was allegedly kidnapped on Saturday from his house in Kakamba village, Kibanda parish, Kamwezi sub county.

Mugabo was kidnapped, pushed into a car with the license plate UAX 039L, and driven to an unknown location. Before his release, the kidnappers called his relatives and demanded a ransom of 5 million shillings.

Mugabo’s relative, David Murisa, claims that after contacting the police for assistance, they mobilized and paid 3 million shillings before Mugabo was released on Sunday night.

Captain Kwesiga, Arinaitwe, and Nsiime were stopped at a police checkpoint in Sanga, Kiruhura district, while traveling to Kampala, according to Elly Maate, the police spokeswoman for the Kigezi region.

Police have discovered an AK47 gun with 30 rounds of ammo, an army jacket, and 500,000 Shillings, according to Maate. Another suspect, Abel Musiime, is still on the loose, according to him.

The kidnappers took Mugabo up to Lyantonde town and withdrew 3 million shillings from his mobile money account, according to Mugabo.

The kidnappers, according to Mugabo, handed him money so that he could return to Mbarara.
