Why did Oleksandr Zinchenko cry on the Arsenal bench during the Liverpool game?

Why did Oleksandr Zinchenko cry on the Arsenal bench during the Liverpool game?

The Arsenal defender was visibly upset after being substituted immediately after contributing to Liverpool’s late equalizer, as Arsenal dropped points at an inopportune time.

Arsenal’s left winger Oleksandr Zinchenko was filmed on the bench during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, and he appeared to be in tears at one point.

It was a thrilling match between the two teams, with Mikel Arteta’s men racing into a 2-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes before Liverpool gradually began to gain a foothold in the tie. Mohamed Salah started the comeback with a goal on the stroke of halftime, but Roberto Firmino equalized late to break Arsenal hearts.

If Arsenal had held their nerve, they would have been in a fantastic position in the title race. Instead, their lead at the top has shrunk to just six points, despite having played one more game than nearest rivals Manchester City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold nutmegged Zinchenko, who should have done better before the England international lofted an inviting cross into the area for Firmino to head home, to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory.

According to talkSPORT, Zinchenko’s tears were caused by the fact that the Ukrainian international felt responsible for Arsenal losing the game at such a crucial stage of the season.

Jamie Carragher slammed Zinchenko for failing to deal with Alexander-Arnold in the build-up to Firmino’s goal at full-time.

“I can’t get Zinchenko out of my head,” said Carragher. “When the league title is on the line, you must be more aggressive. That is not possible.

“Zinchenko’s intensity must be increased. He almost appears to be training and does not want the ball to pass through his legs.”

Roy Keane, another Sky Sports pundit, echoed a similar sentiment, saying, “You think about the modern full-back and the obsession is how good they are going forward. “

I believe they have lacked genuine defensive pride. Zinchenko needed to get low. It’s all far too simple, especially if you want to win titles.”

Zinchenko was replaced immediately after the goal by Scotland international Kieran Tierney, who many consider to be a better defender than the Ukrainian but lacks the same attacking output.

It remains to be seen whether Arteta will give Zinchenko another chance in the upcoming league match against West Ham on Sunday afternoon, or whether he will give Tierney some minutes as the starting left-back.
