A residential school for Afghan girls has temporarily relocated to Rwanda.
In response to Basij-tweet, Rasikh's the Rwandan Ministry of Education stated that it was looking forward to welcoming the SOLA community to Rwanda.
The country’s only girls boarding school is temporarily relocating to Rwanda for a “study abroad” session, with Afghanistan under the hands of the Taliban, who have forbidden young women from formal education.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Shabana Basij-Rasikh, the co-founding president of the School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA), reported that the private school’s almost 250 students, instructors, staff, and family members had departed Kabul last week.
“SOLA is resettling, but our relocation is temporary,” she stated in one of a series of tweets. “We’re thinking about doing a semester abroad. We hope to return to Afghanistan as soon as conditions on the ground allow.”
Basij-Rasikh said that they are on their way to Central Africa, through Qatar, where they plan to study.
In response to Basij-tweet, Rasikh’s the Rwandan Ministry of Education stated that it was looking forward to welcoming the SOLA community to Rwanda.
The Central African country is one of several countries that have agreed to temporarily house Afghans, according to the US State Department. The number of Afghans Rwanda will accept is unknown.
Basij-Rasikh shared a video on Facebook on Friday showing her destroying student records in order to safeguard their identity from the Taliban.
The school administrator expressed her sadness for her country on Twitter on Tuesday.
“I’ve stood in Kabul and witnessed the Afghan people’s terror, rage, and ferocious bravery. When I look at my students, I see the faces of the millions of Afghan girls who remain behind, exactly like them,” Basij-Rasikh stated. “You can’t look away from those girls, and you can’t leave them alone.
If there’s one thing I ask of the world, it’s that you keep your gaze fixed on Afghanistan. Don’t let your focus stray as the weeks pass. See those girls, and by doing so, you will hold those in positions of authority accountable.”
