A report on the UPDF’s deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MPs are enraged after the administration fails to table a report on the UPDF's deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

For the second time in a row, the government has failed to deliver a full report to Parliament documenting Uganda’s decision to deploy troops to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, as required by law.

The delay in presenting the report to Parliament, according to MPs led by Lwemiyaga County member Theodore Ssekikubo, is a clear signal that the executive is undermining Parliament and warning legislators of penalties.

Last week, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja vowed to give a full report to Parliament on Uganda’s force deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as required by law.

On December 7, when the government was due to table the report, Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs Vincent Ssempijja failed to appear, prompting Ssekikubo to inquire as to when the administration plans to bring the long-awaited report to Parliament.

The flamboyant lawmaker also had harsh words for Government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa, who said last week that the government will deliver a report when it is ready.

Ugandan forces have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo for more than a week, ostensibly to clear out ADF militants. The deployment, which the two countries agreed to, has elicited conflicting reactions from government officials.
