Doha, Qatar | QNA | A few days prior to the commencement of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy landed in Doha on Sunday morning, concluding its global journey of more than 50 nations and territories.
In May, the original World Cup trophy began its first global tour since 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, touring all the countries competing in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and additional countries.
The promotional trip afforded supporters the opportunity to witness the trophy, for which 32 teams will battle beginning next Sunday, being awarded to the victorious team at Lusail Stadium on Qatar’s National Day, December 18th.
The original FIFA World Cup Trophy will stay under the supervision of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and FIFA until the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, at which point it will be presented to the winning team.
Only former champions and heads of state are permitted to touch the trophy, which is temporarily held by the winning team, per FIFA regulations.
Later, the winners receive a unique gold-plated copy containing the inscriptions of the tournament’s flag, the flags of the host countries, and the name of the winning team, known as the champion copy. Meanwhile, the original gold trophy is returned to FIFA in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Although the trophy is awarded to the victorious team, it remains FIFA’s property. The award is constructed of solid gold and weighs 6,142 kilos. Its current design, which depicts two individuals hoisting the globe aloft, dates back to 1974.
