In November of last year, police despatched teams from the Crime Intelligence Unit and the Flying Squad, led by Director of Police Operations Edward Ochom, to track down and apprehend suspects in the killings of police officers.
Unknown people attacked two police stations, one in Mityana district and the other in Kiboga district, killing four officers and stealing their rifles.
Corporal Francis Nsubuga, the in charge of the Nakasozi police post, and Special Police Constable- SPC Paul Dimba, both of Kiboga district, were killed, bringing the total number of killed police officers to nine.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga told journalists at police headquarters in Naguru that four more suspects had been detained in connection with the deadly attacks on police officers, increasing the total number of suspects in custody to 33.
Alex Bogere, a native of Namagara village in Kakiri sub-county, Wakisho district, was discovered with one of the stolen pistols at Ssekanyonyi police station in Mityana district. According to Enanga, 18 rounds of ammo had already been spent out of a total of 30.
UCFC is thought to have another member. Samuel Lwanga Ssengonzi, a Kasanda local, was detained on suspicion of harboring UCFC rebels in Kasanda’s Kabusi hamlet. The search for suspects, according to Enanga, is ongoing.
Ugandans are being urged to remain vigilant in the face of terrorism and domestic extremism, according to police.
“All Ugandans should remain alert and vigilant; you may believe they are targeting police stations, but previous attacks have shown that they are also targeting other soft targets, so we must remain vigilant and fight together against such enemies who seek to disrupt the country’s peace and security,” he added.
