The registration process for party members interested in running for an East African Legislative Assembly seat has been completed by the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) (EALA).
The NRM Electoral Commission had 115 applicants in total by the time registration and statement of interest closed.
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chair of the NRM Electoral Commission, the 115 will compete for the six slots held by the ruling party.
He stated that the names will be sent to CEC for review and consideration by the commission.
“We have received 115 candidates contending for the party’s 6 open positions; we will forward the names to the CEC for review. This degree of interest is an indication of the party’s and its organs’ high vitality. To have 115 members express interest in the EALA is a positive indicator and a record that has never been achieved, according to Dr. Tanga.
On June 28 at their headquarters in Kampala, the NRM party began the process of expressing interest for members who want to run for the EALA Positions.
The CEC would next suggest and forward the list of finalists to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus for further consideration after receiving the names of the applicants.
James Kakooza, Denis Namara, George Odongo, Rose Akol, Mary Mugenyi, and Paul Musamali are the current members of the EALA’s House of Representatives.
An MP may only serve for two terms under the EALA, each of which lasts five years.
